What is West Nile Virus?
The West Nile virus is spread by infected mosquitoes. About 20 - 50% of patients may have a rash. Muscle weakness with other
related symptoms. Many people are bitten by mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus but few people develop severe disease or even
notice any symptoms at all. For patients with severe cases of West Nile virus infection, the outlook is more uncertain. West Nile
encephalitis or meningitis may lead to brain damage and death. Approximately 10% of patients with brain inflammation do not survive.
What is Eastern Equine Encephalitis?
EEE is spread by mosquitoes. The disease spreads to the brain and symptoms begin from a few days to
more than a week after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The symptoms include a sudden onset of headache,
high fever, chills and vomiting. The disease can progress to disorientation, seizures and coma. It is fatal in
approximately 30 percent of the cases. In less severe cases a skin rash, swollen lymph glands, body aches and tiredness can occur.
